DENVER — Physicians across Colorado today applauded the General Assembly for passing House Bill 1370 to make health care more affordable, accessible, and transparent. They thanked the bill sponsors, Rep. Iman Jodeh, Rep. Emily Sirota, Sen. Janet Buckner, and Sen. Faith Winter for leading on the legislation, which is now awaiting signing from Gov. Jared Polis.
“By making prescription drugs more affordable and insurance copays more transparent, this legislation will help make sure that no Coloradan has to choose between their health and their financial security,” said Dr. Michael Belmonte, an OB/GYN in the Denver metro area. “As a physician, it’s too often that I see patients who have put off recommended testing or treatments, or rationed their prescriptions, because of cost concerns, and this bill will help prevent those heartbreaking situations. I’m grateful that the General Assembly has taken action to help Coloradans manage health conditions earlier, when they’re easier, cheaper, and less painful to treat. I urge Governor Jared Polis to sign this bill without delay and help save lives in our state.”
HB 1370 will pass prescription medication rebates onto consumers, rather than insurance carriers, and require 25 percent of insurance plans to have set dollar copays, rather than less predictable percentage-based payments. Furthermore, it will ensure medications can’t be dropped from coverage and reform step therapy.
“Patients shouldn’t be denied prescription medications that improve their quality of life just because insurance corporations don’t want to pay for them,” said Dr. Lauri Costello, a family medicine physician in Durango. “HB 1370 will help ensure my patients, and all Coloradans, can take the medications prescribed by their trained physicians, not insurance corporations. We thank Rep. Jodeh, Rep. Sirota, Sen. Buckner, and Sen. Winter for leading this charge for Colorado residents and helping to improve their health and quality of life.”
