LAS VEGAS – Nearly 30 doctors practicing across Nevada have signed a letter urging the Nevada Legislature to pass and Governor Steve Sisolak to sign when it comes to his desk SB 420 to create the Nevada Public Option. SB 420 is being heard in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee today, Tuesday, May 4th. It would help rein in skyrocketing premium costs and ensure all Nevadans have at least one affordable health care option.
“The Nevada Public Option will help level the playing field for the countless patients who have been priced out of our health care system, unable to keep up with their care because of outrageous cost,” said Dr. Scott Welker, a surgeon in Zephyr Cove. “This critical legislation will mean patients can get the care they need, when they need it, without wondering if they will be able to afford to pay rent at the end of the month. Catastrophic health care costs have catastrophic health consequences for Nevadans, and for too long, the loss of a job or the lack of health care choice has brought about unnecessary suffering. Expanding access will not only help keep Nevadan families healthy but it will ultimately save thousands of lives.”
Nevada remains one of the least-insured states in the nation. SB 420 would create another option on the health care menu — those currently insured could keep their insurance or purchase the new lower-cost health care option.
“As physicians, we see too many Nevadans struggle to get the care they need to stay healthy, work and care for their families. They have fewer options. They pay higher costs. Because of unaffordable health care, too many families in Nevada today struggle to make ends meet, especially low-income and rural families,” shares the letter signed from Nevadan physicians. “They deserve change, and the Nevada Public Option can provide much-needed relief.”
It continues to urge elected officials stating: “A public option is critical to improving health and saving the lives of all Nevadans, regardless of where they live. And during a pandemic, access to health care can mean life and death. We urge you to pass the Nevada Public Option so all Nevadans may enjoy a healthier, stronger future.”
