What is the Committee to Protect Health Care?

The Committee to Protect Health Care (CTP) is a national health care advocacy organization building a pro-patient majority in Congress and states; confronting the failures of the American health care system with political and legislative solutions through the trusted voices of medical professionals and experts.

From advocating for reforms in the press, fighting to hold anti-health care politicians accountable, facing down disinformation, and more, doctors, nurses, and activists of the Committee to Protect Health Care team are improving the American health care system one hard-fought win at a time.

Dr. Ann Helms, is a Neurologist in Milwaukee. She completed medical school at the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and a Neurology residency at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Her practice is focused on inpatient management of Neurovascular disease as well as neurotrauma and other critical care neurology disorders. Kate is the incoming Georgia State Lead and practice obstetrics and gynecology in Georgia. She completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at the University of North Carolina after earning a Doctorate of Medicine from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from New York University, a Masters of Arts from The New School in International Affairs, and a Bachelor of Arts from the College of William and Mary with High Honors in East Asian Studies. She has seven years of professional nonprofit experience, including working in international reproductive health with EngenderHealth; global diplomacy with One To World; environmental advocacy with Green Corps; and grassroots community organizing in Kenya and India with GROOTS International.

He completed his internship and residency at Columbia University Medical Center, where he was also an assistant professor in the department of medicine. He completed his cardiology training at George Washington University Medical Center, where he was named chief fellow. Dr. Ashby also completed a postdoctoral clinical and research fellowship in vascular medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Most recently, he served as the director of vascular cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center prior to opening Comprehensive Vascular Care.

After Medical School at the University of Rochester in upstate New York, Kristen Nordenholz completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and joined the faculty. Then she and her husband moved to Tuba City Arizona where they enjoyed working for the Indian Health Service for the next five years. She developed expertise in bedside Ultrasound, which enabled her to take a faculty job at the University of Colorado in 2001 where she continues to be a Professor on the faculty doing research on venous thromboembolism and educating medical students and residents. She is very interested in social justice and advocacy and is a strong proponent of doing the right thing for patients.

Dr. Cadey Harrel is a family physician, and founder of Agave Family Medicine & Breastfeeding Support Center and Tucson based nonprofit, Agave Community Health & Wellness. In her prior academic career, she developed a dedicated Women’s Health Clinic with the University of Arizona for the community of South Tucson, focusing on health disparities. She also served on the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Protocol Committee, having authored numerous evidence based protocols for the care of patients during lactation and breastfeeding, most notably with one adopted by the World Health Organization as standard of care for maternity practices supportive of breastfeeding. Currently, Dr. Harrel serves on the boards for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona and the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians, as a member of their Legislative Task Force. She is committed to health equity, and continually advocates for the health needs of her patients and community.
