Accessible, Affordable, & Equitable Care

At the Committee to Protect Health Care, we believe that everyone deserves access to quality, affordable health care. We fight to remove barriers to care and make sure every patient, regardless of background or income, has access to the high-quality care they deserve.

Our work focuses on making health care affordable and equitable for every American.

Patients cannot achieve financial stability or maintain their health without affordable care—something our network of 36,000+ doctors understands firsthand.

We work to advance state-based health care coalitions and drive change in patient health care pricing that families need.

Physicians, along with our team of organizing and communications staff, leverage our expertise to respond to legislative opportunities to help bring down health care costs and barriers to care across states. We work in statewide coalitions to help drive immediate policy wins and advance long-term progress for health care affordability.

We’re also working at the federal level to leverage bipartisan opportunities to bring down health care costs and increase access, such as via site-neutral payments. We’ve used meetings with members of Congress, digital ads, and earned media to help build a foundation for future reform.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Prescription Drug Affordability Boards

Prescription drugs only work when patients can afford them, and doctors know too well that, right now, too many patients can’t.

We’ve helped implement Prescription Drug Affordability Boards in states like Colorado and Minnesota that are setting upper payment limits on needed prescriptions so that patients can actually access the lifesaving drugs they need.

Facility Fees

It’s not just prescription drug costs and insurance premiums that are putting the squeeze on patients — another lesser known contributor to rising health care costs are facility fees.

These are often hidden charges tacked on to a patient’s bill simply because they received care at a facility owned or operated by a hospital system. We’re working to educate the public about these unfair fees so that patients aren’t blindsided by higher costs and dissuaded from seeking needed care.
